christmas | gifts

I had a light bulb moment a couple of weeks ago, reading a note on a facebook business page - I didn't make any handmade gifts for the children last year, not because I "ran out of time", but because I was scared that they wouldn't think those gifts were good enough!

On Christmas morning, 2009, I heard the most awful words out of a child's mouth - "where's the rest?" - and it really threw me. I had tried to set a budget and stick to it, as opposed to my usual just-buy-everything-you-think-the-kids-might-like style of Christmas shopping, and I had, for the most part, stuck to the budget. And then came those words.

I know that the little kids will love anything that they find under the tree, but the big kids have me worried. Because this year is going to be different. Not every gift is going to be handmade, but there will be a few of them. (I just hope that I can find enough ideas for all the different ages and stages!)

Do you give handmade gifts?

  1. I so know what you mean about handmade gifts. Although we don't have children I would love to give family members handmade items but its the fear they'll look at them and think I've either lost the plot, or that the gift is rubbis. So I'm with you.

  2. I'm with you too..I am my own biggest critic and expect anything I make to be better than perfect....I can't cope with the pressure I put myself under!

  3. Hi Cate I'm catching up today! Re your last post, please please do go and have a chat with the doc just in case there is anything they can do to help. Sometimes there are other medical explanations for feeling like that - could even be something simple like anaemia and I hate to see you feeling like this if it could be avoided at all. Will you think about it?x

  4. Last Christmas was the first time I've given handmade gifts (& I was pretty nervous about the reaction). I made personalized ornaments for the kids and personalized altered clipboards for the adults in the family, then cookies-in-a-jar for friends. It turned out great and (I think) everyone really like them. Not sure what I'm doing this year, but it's definitely time to start thinking about it.
