Review | Olympus OMD EM10 camera

Today's prompt review your camera They say the best camera is the one you have with you. I believed that, until I got the Olympus OMD E-M10. I'm going to tell you all about it, but I want to hear about your camera too, your likes and dislikes.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with photography. Growing up, my dad had a Canon SLR, and developed his own photos, and I loved helping him with the process. I took photography at school, and was always the kid with the camera on school camp (not that many of those photos ever turned out, I've always been a point and shoot photographer in a rushed moment.)

I got my first digital camera just after Christmas 2005, my gift to myself. I still have the camera, and the photos I took with it. Shortly after that, I discovered scrapbooking, and met Steve, and later that same year bought a better camera - a Fuji 8mpx. I still have that camera, Douglas took it on his recent adventure to Perth.

In 2011, I upgraded again, to another Fuji, a 14mpx. Shortly after I got that camera, I got my first iPhone, and spent much of the next four years having to remind myself to use the "big camera", but most of my photos from that period are phone photos. And while I'm slightly annoyed with myself, I still have memories captured, so it's ok.

For about two years now, I've been following FatMumSlim via blog and instagram. In the blogging world, she's a bit of an icon, but her photos speak loudly to the scrapbooker in me, so I've watched with interest from the sidelines. About a year ago, she mentioned that she'd started using an Olympus OMD EM10. I did a bit of research, but put it on the back burner, cause finances were so tight.

Then Olympus paired up with Kidspot last year, and a few more bloggers were using the cameras in a competition for the Voices 2014 promotion. I noticed Lila Wolff's images, and had a bit of a chat with her about the camera, and started looking into it again.

In all honesty, I was sold at the mention of wi-fi. To be able to move photos from camera to instagram seemed amazing to my photo-sharing-self, so when finances eased and I was able to dream about actually owning one, my heart was set.

The actual date of purchase was random, and I probably should have shopped around a bit more, because I paid way over the Olympus RRP, even though I talked the store into a deal! I immediately misplaced the manual as I was opening the box, and got the CD stuck in my computer, so I didn't get to take the amazing camera on my one day trip to Melbourne (I ended up way too sick, anyway), but once I finally figured out that the reason it wouldn't work was because the lens wasn't on properly (two weeks of tears!), I use the camera on an almost daily basis.

I'm still in auto mode - mostly because I'm taking such quick photos that I don't really have time to fiddle with program settings, but with time and practise that will change. It's a little bit heavier than my old Fuji, but half the size. I always use the neck strap (which you should use anyway, but I'd gotten lazy), because I'm constantly worrying about dropping the camera.

All the photos I've been sharing here over the last couple of months have been from the Olympus. I can definitely see a difference in the image quality, and it's inspiring to see photos look good. (Not that iPhone photos don't look good, but these are better.)

Using the wi-fi on the camera is easy, you just need the app on your smartphone and follow the bouncy ball. The ability to take photos through the app is also awesome, means you can get the family looking good in group photos, while you're in the photo!

The only problem I'm having with it is remembering to charge the battery - I've never had a camera with a rechargeable battery before, so getting a second battery is on my list.

I'm glad I invested in the Olympus OMD EM10. Now I need to invest time in knowing it better.
