And are looked at when determining scholarships. Once you are in college, what you did in high school doesn't count for diddly squat. The problem here is that too much emphasis is placed on SAT scores - and for smart students with lots to offer who simply don't do well in the testing situation.... it's just not an accurate predictor of their capability for success.
