work in progress wednesday

Back in May, the craft group that I'd been attending each weekly unexpectedly closed down. I had just been starting to get into a groove with my crat again, so I was kind of at a loss as to how I would make craft work again at home.

A couple of weeks ago, I got fed up with not purposely making space for craft, so whipped a quick text message off to my sister-in-law, Caitlin {who is probably going to freak out at being called that, but what else do you call your brother's girlfriend?} and organised for her to come over the next day (Wednesday, the same day craft group used to meet)

I didn't do anything that first week, just pushed paper around, looked at my stash of clear stamps, discovered that my StazOn was dried out, and gossiped about all sorts of kid- and craft-related stuff. Then last week, I decided it was time to baste the triangle quilt. And once it was basted, I pulled out the sewing machine. Sophie was struggling a bit (turns out she was probably starting to get sick), and I don't expect to get much done this week, because she actually is sick now, but it felt good to sit at the machine, and sew some straight lines.

Caitlin is hosting the Aussie Work in Progress over at LittleWhiteDove today, and then she'll probably be eating cream bun with me, because what is a craft day without indulging in yummy treats?!

WIP | quilt for Sophie

My craft group unexpectedly closed down last month, and for various reasons nothing has taken it's place yet, so I was pretty excited when my friend from Little White Dove proposed a Saturday Night Craftalong on instagram.

Last Saturday night Steve had the night off, so I was able to get a few projects worked on while he kept an eye on Sophie. Most of those other projects are still in progress, but this quilt for Sophie is one step closer to completion.

It isn't 100% perfect, but I worked slowly and carefully, and I'm pretty impressed with my effort. I've had a minor snag with the backing fabric (it isn't wide enough!), so I've changed my plans, and this weekend I'm hoping to get it all pinned together for quilting.

quilt for sophie

I got all the rows of triangles sewed together on Monday night. And then I spent an hour shuffling the rows around on Tuesday afternoon, trying to come up with the grouping that didn't have any diamonds showing, because randomly selecting triangles and rows still results in patterns!

I can't wait to start sewing the rows together (although who knows when that might be, new sleep routines & new husband routines all take time figuring out) and see how this quilt comes together.

But how should I back it? I originally bought the butterfly fabric for the back, but the cream doesn't quite match. Then I thought I  might cut into my vintage sheets (both the yellow and pink are from that stash), but now I'm not quite sure. The binding is going to be a darker grey.

Do you make quilts? Or do you sew?
