essential elements of an excellent blog

There are some elements of a blog that bring people back again and again. Readers will connect with a blog for different reasons, but these main elements seem to be standard amongst the blogs I keep reading.

  1. amazing photos the internet is becoming a more visual medium as life moves quicker. Amazing photos like the ones my friend Deb shares keep me coming back again and again.
  2. authentic voice when you read about someone else's life, just like reading a book you need to actually visualise their world, even with photos as an aid. Toni does this exceptionally well for someone who has only been blogging a couple of years.
  3. a photo of you as a personal blogger, you are your brand. I'm not interested in seeing a photo of you hiding behind something, I want to see you, and how you fit into your world. Sian has taken this idea and built it into a fabulous series of Monday posts.
  4. helpful there's a line of thinking that every blog post should be helpful to readers, even if it's to let them know that they're not the only one who feels that way. Gayel has been excellent at doing this since I first stumbled on her blog almost two years ago.
What makes you come back to a blog again and again?

  1. Well aren't you sweet, Cate! I popped in this morning to read your new installment and I am so honored to see that you have included me in the mix. Thanks so much! Posting my photos is really what drives my blog, and lately I haven't had as many to share (busy schedule at the time) and I know that's a big factor in my blogging slump. LOL. I'll get back to it. Thanks for your acknowledgement here, Cate, it really encourages me to keep blogging. :o)

  3. It's definitely a visual thing. So many blogs are ugly and have pop ups everywhere and it really puts me off.

  4. Great post! For me, the authentic voice is really important in reading other blogs - I can source information lots of other ways, the thing that bloggers offer is their invididual experience and thoughts about those facts. (And now I'm going to have to come back here tomorrrow when I have more time and check out all the links too!)

  5. I love an authentic voice and a hefty dose of reality! I want to know that someone's life isn't all roses and lattes!!!! I hope that my blog is useful...its really why I started it...to be USEFUL. I try to be personal but not overly personal so as to fill it with my life...cause I just want to bang on about children's books and their wonder and importance. For my hefty dose of reality I go to Eden Riley...cause I love her!

  7. I agree with everything you say - but I still can't bring myself to put up a photo of me. Giving away that last little bit of personal privacy is just a step too far for some of us.

  8. I definitely love great pictures and if a blog rants on all about the blogger and offers nothing for me than it isn't very interesting.
