Lessons from Mum

Today's prompt what is the most important lesson your mother taught you? It's Mothers Day in Australia, so let's celebrate by remembering the things our mums taught us.
I often tell my children, especially the teen ones, that they may think I'm awful now, but they'll get it when they become parents. I didn't get along with my mum as a teenager, but I got it when I became a parent. And then I read this beautiful essay from Coffee & Crumbs today.

I remember the first time I got sick when Chloe was about 6 months old. Her dad was working nights, so slept all day, and then Chloe got sick. It seemed like an endless week of snot and sleeplessness, panadol and visits to the doctor for both of us. As we both started to get better, I called mum.

"How did you do it?" I asked her

"Do what?" she says

"Not ever get sick when we were kids."

"I did get sick," she says "you never knew about it because you were sick, too."

In that moment, I got it. Mums put aside the things they want or need, to clean up snot day after day. Because in that moment, there is nothing else as important as wiping that little nose, and calming them down when they can't breath, and finding something for them to eat, and putting yourself aside for them.

I think the lesson in that is that kids will never notice. Even teens becoming more self-aware have no real understanding of just how much mums give for them. But the lack of notice doesn't stop us doing it, and maybe one day our kids will get it.

Happy Birthday for last Friday, mum, and Happy Mothers Day.

Tomorrow's prompt  say hello to Monday. This week, I'd like you to set a goal to finish something you've been putting off, and outline all the steps you need to take to achieve the goal by Friday. Don't forget, small steps make it less overwhelming.

  3. I couldn't agree more with your sentiment - they won't get it until they have kids of their own!
