I decided if I was going to do this series any justice at all, I had to go back right to the very beginning.
The term "blog" was coined in 1999, a shortening of the term "weblog" In their earliest format, blogs were online diaries, places for the writer/blogger to share the stories of their lives.
Blogs these days haven't moved far away from their origins, they're still a place to share stories, but they have diversified with the growth of blogging niches, which is when a blog focuses on one main topic, for example, fashion or craft.
So, why should you write a blog?
To share your knowledge
To share your story
To remember events
To grow your business
To collect a topic eg recipes
As a scrapbooker and sometimes crafter, I started my blog to share my scrapbooking pages, and capture our family stories to share with my family living apart from us, and to remember for my children. I like to think of it as an "online scrapbook", something that will be around forever for my kids.
Do you blog? Why did you start?
Hi Cate ~ I'm really looking forward to your blogging series this month. Blogging has changed for me over the past couple of years and I'm trying to figure out the best way to continue. When I first started blogging it was a way to show my mom the crafts I made and also to keep in touch with her by way of photos and stories as she lived in another state. Eventually, as I began making friends in the blog world, my blogging changed. I think I found my blogging voice a few years ago and was really comfortable with that, but then my mom was diagnosed with cancer and things changed again. I now have a lot of extended family reading my blog, as well as a lot of local friends. Somehow that has changed my desire to want to continue blogging and it's difficult to explain within the confines of this comment here on your blog. Maybe I've just grown tired of it? I don't know... Not to mention that my interests have changed and I'm really focused on yoga teacher training rather than crafting for my mom to see. I'm considering starting a new blog with a yoga focus but I'm still undecided. How's that for a wishy-washing answer? LOL.
ReplyDeleteYay, I am looking forward to this. Bloggers are a navel-gazey sort of bunch, aren't we? I think it is very much a reflection of how passionate we are about what we do. I started my current blog as a way to have a creative outlet for myself, because I was drowning in motherhood. It's ironic that I chose motherhood as a platform or subject area for my blog, but I figured I'd write about what I know. Which, for now, is the ins-and-outs of parenting because I don't read, I don't keep up with current affairs, I'm not really learning anything new and I feel entirely boring. I figured I'd take those lemons and make lemonade. It gives me something to talk about at dinner parties. LOL.
