#baby5 | mother's intuition and old wives tales

When I was pregnant with Chloe many years ago, I knew I was having a girl. We didn't find out at the morphology scan, because we wanted the surprise, but I'd had a dream and if there's one thing I've learnt about myself it's to trust my intuition.

Natalie, 5 months old
When I was pregnant with Natalie, I had another dream about a girl, so I was sure that it was right.

Riley, ten minutes old
With Riley, the pregnancy was so completely different, I suspected it was a boy. So we did find out at the morphology scan. And we were right.
18+1
But this time, mother's intuition failed me!

We found out last week with our amnio results, and I can't figure out how I got it so wrong!

Let's look at some old wives tales, and compare them to my pregnancy (and the previous two), and see if we can figure it out together.

old wives tale - combine mum's age at conception and the number of the month of conception, if the result is odd, then it's a girl; even, it's a boy
Natalie = 39    Riley = 47    ? = 48
old wives tale - craving sweet food? it's a girl. craving salty or sour food, it's a boy
Natalie = ice cream     Riley = sweet thai chilli chips    ? = fruit salad
old wives tale - if you have morning sickness in early pregnancy, it's a girl. if not, it's a boy.
Natalie = 24/7, until birth    Riley = 24/7 until 16wks, then 26wks until birth    ? = stopped at 12wks
old wives tale - if your right breast is bigger, it's a boy. if it's the left, it's a girl
Natalie = left    Riley = left    ? = left  (after years of breast feeding, I'm lopsided!)
old wives tale - if you sleep on your left side, it's a boy. if you sleep on the right, it's a girl.
Natalie = right    Riley = left    ? = left
old wives tale - if your belly looks like a basket ball, it's a boy. if it looks like a watermelon, it's a girl.
Natalie = watermelon    Riley = basket ball    ? = you decide
Have a guess, what do you think I'm having?
Were any of those old wives tales true for you?
I'll be back on Sunday to tell you baby's gender

  2. Milo was supposed to be a girl...!! EVERYTHING said girl. I 'knew' he was a boy, or maybe I wanted a girl that badly, that I told myself it would be a boy to avoid disappointment... Which happened anyway =/ I really hope we get a girl next time around, but have decided to not find out when the time comes I think.
    How exciting Cate. Hope all the shock has worn off, you make beautiful babies, whatever sex they might be :) xx

  3. I craved salty (plain potato chips, toasted ham sandwiches) with my boy; barely any morning sickness. I was sicker with my girl. Had a "gut instinct" (pardon the pun!) about what I was having with both and I was right :-)

  6. I didn't accept anyone's intuition about my baby's gender. Only it knew. Besides, 50% of people were wrong! All I can go on is statistics...every single person I know when pregnant has a girl, unless they already have a girl. Congratulations on number 5! Big family, wow. Zanni http://heartmama.net

  7. Congrats on the fact you will soon be having a boy to kiss, cuddle and adore you! With my three I was blind for my first two but found out for my third! Have you heard about the ring thing, where it's dangled over your belly?? All the best, found you via FYBF - Emily

  8. Some of those old wives tales definitely don't work for me - I was so sure I was having a boy (not because I had tried any of those but because I thought I knew !!!) and when a girl popped out I told them to check and double check because I was so sure I was having a boy !!!
    Have the best week and thanks for stopping by my blog !

  10. Well according to most of those OWT you should be having a girl, so I'm guessing a boy :)

  11. Fascinating, as I had no idea about all those old wives' tales! I wouldn't dare guess ... though as I've got a 50/50 chance ... I'm going with boy. :)

  13. Oh you little tease! I thought you were going to tell us! I've been guessing you're having a girl, but apparently there's no rhyme or reason to the guessing method!

    When I was pregnant with Carrie my doctor guessed she was a boy based on the rate of her heartbeat. I had no ultrasound at that time because it was a healthy pregnancy and "back then" they didn't do ultrasounds unless there was a problem. Imagine my surprise (and JOY!) when she was born and the doctor said, "It's a girl!"

    Can't wait to hear what you're having!!! :o)
