video? dvd? who cares?

As I was sorting through the dvd cupboard this morning (very random, even Nat asked why I was doing it), I had a sudden thought. I often refer to the videos-in-my-collection, and the kids never ask what I mean, but they actually have no idea what a video is.

We do still have a mountain of videos (Doctor Who, of all things, an occasional gift from a neighbour who didn't want to throw them out,) but no machine to watch them with (it finally died a sad death a couple of years ago)

This is a pile of never-opened dvds. I have never seen Avatar or The Hungers Games. Storm Boy is still one of my all-time-favourite-ever-movies, and we often watched it at primary school on big reel-to-reel film projectors. The Muppet Movie is just a classic I had to add to my collection for the kids. I've seen most of The Last King of Scotland, but visitors dropped in about thirty minutes from the end, and I've never had a chance to finish it.

Classic chick-flick movies that must be owned and watched whenever possible.

Classic kids movies that must be kept away from grubby hands. I have never seen Beauty and the Beast, and won a copy of it from 4 Squirts and a Dollop of Cream about 2 months ago. I still haven't watched it.

Classics that must be watched whenever they're on tv. And we must own them on dvd, because you never know when the urge to watch one will strike. (it's hasn't, yet)

Husband's choice of must-own movies - the only one never-seen is Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which has now been added to this weekend's pile of must-watch-when-the-cleaning-is-done-movies.

So what about you - DVD or video?

  1. Ooh, you must watch Avatar - I think it is a wonderful movie. We were one of the last people we knew to watch it .... I think watching it so long after all the hype of the movie made it even more enjoyable ;-) I haven't seen Hunger Games yet either ;-)

  2. I was just thinking the other day that we must get a video player so I can watch my collection of Twin Peaks videos! We have a lot of videos, I've been thinking of getting a VHS-DVD converter. Maybe Santa will bring one.
You must watch Avatar! It's excellent!

  4. I've been thinking that I should throw out my big pile of videos (including the pile of Twin Peaks recorded from TV - do you attract a certain type of reader?!). the machine died years ago so I'll never watch them.

    1. probably. actually, I admit to having recorded Twin Peaks off cable tv recently, and then deleting it because it wasn't as awesome as I remembered (or else I was too distracted by kids to pay attention)

  5. Ah, but where is your pile of incredibly embarrassing flicks that you'd never want anyone to know that you secretly love? Come on, 'fess up! We all have a few of them in our collections!
